On January 5, 2024, our Director, Dr. Ron Poropatich, presented to the Pittsburgh Heart, Lung and Blood Vascular Medicine Institute's Research-in-Progress Conference! Dr. Poropatich's presentation was titled "Overview of DoD Medical Research Funding Opportunities." Thank you to the Vascular Medicine Institute for inviting Dr. Poropatich to this conference and sharing the work that he does to connect University of Pittsburgh investigators to the medical and research needs of the Department of Defense.

The Pittsburgh Heart, Lung and Blood Vascular Medicine Institute is holding a special seminar on Research-in-Progress in BST S120 (Address: Vascular Medicine Institute, 200 Lothrop Street Pittsburgh, PA 15261) featuring Dr. Ronald Poropatich, Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, Director, Center for Military Medicine Research at the University of Pittsburgh. 

Nature magazine has published a new paper that features military and University of Pittsburgh researchers. The title of the paper is "Adopting and expanding ethical principles for generative artificial intelligence from military to healthcare." The underlying purpose of this paper is to study the ethical dilemmas and challenges posed by the integration of generative AI into the healthcare practice.

Center for Military Medicine Research Director, Dr. Ron Poropatich, presented to members of the Pitt McGowan community about how they can get involved with Department of Defense (DoD) medical research opportunities. The title of his talk was "DoD Sponsored Medical Research: Funding Sources and Tips for Success." It was a nice crowd gathered to hear from Dr. Poropatich about the tips, strategies and things to know when engaging in medical research for the DoD. Thank you to Dr. Chandan Sen and the Pitt McGowan team for inviting us! 

Center for Military Medicine Research Commercialization Manager, Jan Berkow, visiting the U.S. Air Force's 911th Airlift Wing in Pittsburgh, PA on Tuesday, November 14th. The purpose of the meeting orchestrated between the facility and Pittsburgh Technology Council was an introduction to resources at this Air Force Reserve Aeromedical facility and desire to work with the community.  Examples of collaboration efforts orchestrated via their “SparkCell” innovation organization was mentioned.

The team at the Center for Military Medicine Research hosted members of the University of Pittsburgh community for a Veterans Day reception at the University Club Library on Pitt's campus on Thursday, November 9, 2023. This was an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the Pitt community whom served in the military and are now serving as professors, clinician, staff members, etc. at the University of Pittsburgh.

Center for Military Medicine Research Director, Dr. Ron Poropatich visited Warsaw, Poland on October 22-28, 2023, and participated in the Department of Defense-funded “Casualty Care Assessment of Russo-Ukraine War” meeting focused on Rehabilitation led by Colonel (Ret.) Paul Pasquina, MD, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Uniformed Services for the Health Sciences. Dr.

The Center for Military Medicine Research (CMMR) hosted the Steel City Spark Medical Collider Event on October 12, 2023. The focus of the meeting was to Accelerate Medical Innovation in the Pittsburgh Region. In addition to the team at CMMR, the meeting included members from the following:

· Steel City Spark & U.S. Air Force (The 911th Airlift Wing /171st Air Refueling Wing)

Congratulations to Center for Military Medicine Research Associate Medical Director and University of Pittsburgh's Trauma and Transfusion Medical Research Center Co-Director Dr. Philip Spinella on this new multi-center $34 million clinical trial partnership with Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, (BARDA), that is tackling the leading cause of death in children, trauma.
